If Lucedale is where “people and progress meet,” the Saraland, Alabama is its “gateway.” Saraland was settled in 1807 by pioneer families with names like Alvarez, Rice, Hartley, Moore, LaCoste, Williams, Tool, and Cleveland. Ultimately, the then-named Alvarez Station was called Cleveland Station, and then renamed Saraland by C.J. DeWitt after his wife, Sara. DeWitt opened the first post office there on the Southern Railroad in 1895 – and the “gateway to progress” was founded.
