Originally called LeFleur’s Bluff, after French-Canadian trader, Louis LeFleur, Jackson was founded in 1821 on a bluff overlooking the Pearl River. Citing “beautiful and healthful surroundings, good water, abundant timber, navigable waters, and proximity to the Natchez Trace,” the State of Mississippi authorized Jackson to be the permanent home for the state’s government, and ordered it be named Jackson in honor of Major General Andrew Jackson, who would later become the seventh President of the United States.
